Mechanics of Materials (MoM) or Strength of Materials (SoM) is a study of relationship between the external loads applied to an object and the stress / stain caused by the internal loads within the body. External loads can be applied as concentrated or distributed loadings. In real environments, an object will be subjected to various loads and the object must be designed to withstand the resultants of these loads.
Your task:
Select and study an existing product, review and evaluate the design of the product. You are required to
- Describe the product and its desired applications.
- Identify the external loads that may be applied on the product, intentionally or
unintentionally under normal usage. - Construct free body diagram (FBD) diagram, and determine the reactions on the support(s).
- Identify two potential weak points, and perform relevant engineering analysis,
and determine principle stresses for these points. - Evaluate the factor of safety for this product.
To ease your analysis, you are permitted to make any necessary assumptions. You are required to explain the analysis and the assumptions made.
Report
This section outlines what is largely expected of a report writing, report sections, and their respective marks weightage.
Report Sections:
[20 marks] Introduction and Loadings
The section provides basic information about the product. Clear and concise description of the loadings that apply on the products.
[30 marks] Free Body Diagram (FBD)
This section presents a FBD of the product, and relevant loads that exists. Identify the support(s), analyze and determine the reactions on the support(s).
[40 marks] Combine Loading Analysis
Determine two weak points on the product. Perform analysis, and determine the principle stresses on this points.
[10 marks] Review
Relate the analysis to the design and materials. Provide a short review, and evaluate the factor of safety for the product.
